Chapter Two

It had begun innocently enough eleven months ago as all memorable events do, on a seemingly innocuous ordinary day of our lives. It was early February and an artist friend of mine was invited to display some of his work at a local gallery. He’s one of those impressionist type painters whose work doesn’t do anything for me. I’ve never had a fondness for canvases splattered with globs of paint and random lines seemingly drawn haphazardly through them supposedly delivering some message of deep meaning to society, but he was a close friend of mine so I attended the event.

After spending some time at the small gallery on Fourteenth Street and mingling with the artsy type, having my head filled by their interpretations of so called art that looked like it belonged in a kindergarten class, I was ready to go off—anywhere—for some quiet time and a glass of wine.

The gallery was within walking distance of a small wine and cheese shop called The Wine and Cheese Barn, a cozy small rustic place decked out in a farm motif that in a prior life many years earlier had been a noble hardware store and somewhat still resembled one with its hardwood floors and incandescent lights glowing through old white globes hanging from green patina covered brass chains from the high tin covered ceiling. But the racks filled with nails, hammers, and paint had given way to shelves and cases filled with fine wines and cheeses.

The place conveyed a certain warmth in its current guise, a place where one could spend quiet time perusing the exquisite selection of wine and cheeses before finally making a purchase. The shop also had a separate small section with a bar and red leather covered booths where one could partake of a glass of wine.

I left my car on the gallery parking lot and walked there. It only took a few minutes to reach the place. The Ford was parked outside, a car you couldn’t miss for its elegance and commanding presence. A piece from the past, the shiny black convertible with its gleaming chrome practically demanded that you stop and look at it. I did, walking around it taking in its captivating elegance before stepping inside the old shop.

Once inside I exchanged a few pleasantries with Ben and his wife Ella, the owners—a welcome contrast to spending the better part of the afternoon with the artsy type. Ben tended the wine bar while his wife took charge of the store. The place was in a late afternoon lull, in between the late lunch crowd and the evening people—not a bad time if you want some time to yourself. It turned out to be a significant time in my life.

I purchased a glass of French wine—a vintage Ben recommended—then headed for a booth for some quiet time with my wine and to empty my head of all the art gibberish talk jammed inside, and polluting my regular thought processes, and images of would-be art
